주인공은 Alice와 Bob, Oscar.

Alice와 Bob은 사전에 공유된 키를 가지고 비밀 이야기를 서로 전달하는 역할을 맡고, Oscar은 그 과정을 관찰하여 비밀 이야기를 알아내려는 역할이다.

Alice가 x라는 평문(Plaintext)을 암호화 키를 이용하여 암호화(encryption) 시키면 y라는 암호문(Ciphertext)을 산출하게 된다.
